Library Media Centers and Technology Department

The goal of the CSD Technology Department is to immerse students in a technology-rich learning environment.  During their Technology class, instruction is focused on learning basic computer terminology, operations, and skills utilizing the computer lab in each school.  Students learn to log onto the network and access various age-appropriate software which connects to the curricular areas.

It is the goal of the CSD Library Media Centers to teach students to develop fundamental information literacy skills along with encouraging the love of reading necessary for lifelong learning in the 21st Century.  The program focuses on three main areas:

Literature - Students will listen and respond to a variety of literature, understand and identify characteristics of different genres of literature, as well as develop a knowledge base of a variety of authors and illustrators.

Information Skills - Students will utilize information and materials responsibly while understanding the essential format of a variety of media; learning procedures and organization to locate and select materials suitable to interests and research.

Research Process - Students will learn to explore a topic through gathering, evaluating, analyzing, and synthesizing information from a variety of sources to solve problems, answer questions, gain new understanding to create new knowledge.

Utilizing 21st century skills, we are preparing Colonial School District students to be productive, collaborative, and creative learners.

Library Information Literacy

"At the dawn of the 21st century, where knowledge is literally power, where it unlocks the gates of opportunity and success, we all have responsibilities as parents, as librarians, as educators, as politicians, and as citizens to instill in our children a love of reading so that we can give them a chance to fulfill their dreams."

~Barack Obama, 2005

"To be information literate, a person must be able to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information."

~American Library Association, 1989
