K-3
The elementary science curriculum is designed as a continuum from Kindergarten to grade five. Based on child development theory, the curriculum reflects a range of skills needed for all learners to successfully meet Pennsylvania Academic Standards and is aligned with guidelines set by the National Science Foundation and Science for all Americans Benchmarks. The curriculum is based on the principles of inquiry, discovery, problem solving, deductive reasoning, and experimentation. Concepts taught through inquiry replace teaching scientific facts and develop habits of mind. As a result, instead of a science textbook, supplemental materials provide the appropriate resources. In particular, science kits developed by STC (Science & Technology for Children) and FOSS (Full Option Science System) are implemented in the classroom throughout the school year. Both kits meet the National Science Education Standards and provide a scientific learning environment appropriate for a child’s stage of development. Students will become successful learners prepared for the challenges of subsequent educational levels.
