Word Study Curriculum_K 
I. Essential Purpose
Students will be able to use phonemic awareness, letter knowledge, and letter/sound relationships to read words and understand how words work.
II. State/Local Standards

1.1 C Use knowledge of phonics, word analysis (e.g., root words, prefixes and suffixes), syllabication, picture and context clues to decode and understand new words during reading.

V. Essential Content
A core set of words is used to help students develop fluency in reading and writing, and learn strategies for how words work.
VI. Essential Skills
Use knowledge of structural features of spoken and written language and use word analysis and context clues to decode and understand words.  This includes phonological awareness, letter knowledge, high frequency sight words, letter/sound correspondence, and spelling patterns to decode unknown words.
