District receives additional Classrooms for the Future grant from the state (Jan. 30)
The Colonial School District has received the second year funding for the Classrooms for the Future grant it originally received last year for the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The additional grant in excess of $311,000 was used to purchase 331 more wireless laptops for Plymouth Whitemarsh High School (PWHS). The District has completed the installation of laptops in the Social Studies Department and has begun to install the units in the Language Arts Department.
Last year the District received more than $202,000 in Classrooms for the Future funding. The laptops purchased last year paid immediate dividends.
"Students now have the ability to create various forms of multimedia projects, in which they more readily remain engaged and attentive," said PWHS Master Teacher Chris Manero shown working with a student above. "Students are also able to more freely express their creativity and higher level thinking skills through these cutting-edge assignments.
"I had one student comment about our use of online discussion boards in class," Manero continued. "The student was glad that we are using these types of things in class because they have been using them outside of school for a long time. That was an eye-opener and shows that schools need to keep up with the rest of society in terms of integrating technology. Now that we are giving students the opportunity to take some of the same applications that they use in their social life and bring them into school, the classroom can become much more hands-on and less mundane."
Increased student performance on all levels throughout the District is proof that technology keeps students more engaged.
