What is included with a meal?
All meals include a protein, grain, fruit, vegetable, and 8 oz milk. The state requires that we offer these five components, and the students need to choose 3 of the components to make a meal. If three components are not chosen, the items are charged at a la carte prices. The following are examples of meals vs. non meals:
Meal: Cheeseburger with Milk. The three components are the protein (burger), the grain (bun) and milk.
Not a Meal: Cheeseburger and a Propel Water. There are only two components as recognized by the state, the protein (burger) and the grain (bun). Therefore, unless the student also takes a fruit, vegetable, or milk, the meal is charged as an a la carte price for both the burger and the drink individually.
The cashier at each station should inform the student if he/she has a complete meal or not. They may encourage the student to take either a piece of fruit, side salad, milk, etc.
Any beverage other than 8 oz milk will be charged as an a la carte price. (We sell a variety of juices and water.) If you have a child who is allergic to milk, please send a doctor's note and we can make reasonable accommodations for them.
Any snack item (soft pretzels, ice cream, rice krispy treats, etc) are not included with the meal and are a la carte items only.
Occasionally foods that are normally considered an a la carte item may be listed on the menu for the day. If it is listed on the menu, then it is included as part of that day's meal. For example, at the high school, french fries are an a la carte item. However, on occasion we might menu a cheeseburger with french fries. In that case, since it is listed on the menu, it is included as part of the meal.
